Does anyone know about how deep a good metal detector will detect something?

And also any suggestions on a certain brand.

Whites Electronics is supposed to build one of the better metal detectors available today. They claim good discrimination against unwanted metals, good depth (depth varies depending on type of metal and size of object), etc. They even have underwater models.
