Dye-penetrant testing/ DP Test/ Non destructive test material/Detecting cracks in metal part?

Dye-penetrant testing, detecting cracks in metals, non-destructive test material/DP test?
I would request to be known what is non-destructive test material, it is also called DP test. Is Dye penetrant testing the non destructive test material and why is it called non destructive test material? Are there any alternatives to the dye penetrant testing? What is the advantages of dye penetrant testing over other testing for detecting cracks in metal parts in in every major and minor industry? Is the production of dye penetrant material a profitable business. Kindly also let me know how many kinds of these dye testing material are there? Kindly guide me as I want to puchase a plant producing this dye penetrant testing material. Thanks.

  1. Dye Penetration test is used for testing a fabricated metal equipment, such as tank, reactor, heat exchanger, welded metal piping, etc. It is called non-destructive because equipment or its part is not destroyed during the testing process. Other non-destructive testing are: radiagraphy test, ultrasonic test, etc.

DP test is used for checking the surface finish of a fabricated & welded equipment. It checks the surface crack at the welding spot, etc. First a dye solution is applied to the area or at weld-joint and excessive dye is wiped-off. Then a developer solution is used, which will show any cracks in red-color. The advantage of DP test is that it detects surface crack, if any at weld joints, which other methods can not. It is simple to use. No special equipment is needed to run it and even a semi-literate worker can apply it.

There will always be demand for DP test.
